Brooks Israel says he has a bucket list, and getting a video on the long-running “America’s Funniest Home Videos” show was on it.

“We did it,” the Greenville Little League coach said this week. “We got one!”

Israel submitted a video this summer that features his 9-year-old son, Reeves, getting silly with a few teammates during a break from baseball practice. That moment — which involves a coach, a chair, half a dozen kids and a pie — will be featured Sunday on the ABC show, which airs at 8 p.m.

Reeves played with 12 other boys this summer on the all-star Northwood Little League’s 8-and-under coaches-pitch team, which won the state championship in their division in June.

But before the championship happened, the boys put in hours and hours of practice, meeting for an hour or two five or six days a week during the May and June tournament season. The boys learned batting, fielding and went over fundamentals and split-second game-situation decisions, the Northwood 8U Little League team manager Brent Busha said.

“So if a person is on base, where you go with the ball?” Busha said. “A lot of it is figuring out where to play guys. It’s a lot of work.”

To break the tension and have a little fun, players’ parents took turns entertaining the boys with creative activities during practice pauses. Reeves’ parents brought a water-balloon launcher to one practice; the four boys with the longest launches earned a special reward, unbeknownst to Busha.

They got a chance to throw a pie in his face.

“I was determined that I wasn’t going to get hit with the pie,” Busha said. “The only thing I could think was to duck.”

Busha did duck, and the result was caught on camera.

“It’s pretty hilarious,” said Brooks Israel, whose company, The Hiring Group, helped sponsor the team. “I yelled in the background, ‘Please tell me someone got that on video!’”

Israel got the video and submitted it to the ABC show. America’s Funniest Home Videos liked what they saw and so began a several-week process to sign waivers on all the kids who appeared in the video.

Reeves, the star of the moment, said he is pretty excited about being on TV.

“It’s going to be cool,” Reeves, adding that he plans to tell all his friends about the show.

Asked why he put himself in the path of a pie that day, Reeves was quick to answer.

“Because I wanted to eat the whipped cream. I like the taste.”
